Student Leadership

At Settle College our aim is to develop a culture of leadership with students and teachers working together to lead and manage change.

Some of the opportunities for students to develop their leadership skills at Settle College are:

Student Council

Students are elected from each tutor group to represent their form on the student council. The council meets at least once per term to discuss different aspects of school life and some school policies, with each representative voicing views and ideas from their tutor group. The minutes and findings from these meetings are then shared and discussed at the school senior leadership team meetings to inform the direction of these aspects of school.

Cross key stage work

Some of our Sixth Form students work with a cohort of Yr7 students on their reading; the students meet once per week and the older students listen to, encourage and advise our younger readers to help them grow in confidence and enthusiasm for their reading.

A group of Sixth Form students also volunteer in some KS3 lessons, particularly practical subjects, as part of their “service” in the Sixth Form

Clubs

Students from all key stages are encouraged to take a leadership role within their clubs, with Sixth Form students in particular taking-on some of the organisation and running of these extra-curricular opportunities.

Sixth form leadership team

Each year a group of students applies for a range of positions in running the SFLT; this includes the elected roles of “Senior Leader”, which involves a variety of public speaking and engagement tasks. Each student on the team has leadership over a different area and the team meets every two weeks to update one another and decide on priorities. These roles include organising events, such as the Sixth Form balls, and sports and music events. The team also involve other parts of the school, by leading charity and fund-raising events, both within school and outside, such as cake sales and sponsored walks.
