Severe Weather Emergency Procedures

Whilst every effort will be made to keep the school open during periods of severe weather, there may be occasions in the interests of health and safety for staff and students, where the school site is closed.  The school may be closed when school transport providers advise that the conditions on the roads are dangerous and as a result bus services will not run, or conditions on the school site are hazardous.  If, in extreme circumstances, the school is closed there will be notification on the front page of the school  website, messages via local radio stations (BBC Radio Leeds, Radio Lancashire and Stray FM), text and Twitter.  A voice mail will also be placed on the school’s answering machine informing parents that the school is closed.  We will always aim to alert parents to any school closure by 7.30am.

If weather conditions deteriorate during the school day and there is a need for early closure we will send parents a text message and notification will be on the website and Twitter.  Students will go to their tutor bases and contact their parents using their mobile phones.  If students do not have mobile phones they will be able to use the school’s phones to contact parents.  We ask that parents/carers discuss arrangements for cases of severe weather closure with their children in advance, to ensure a place of safety is available.  Students who cannot get safely home will be supervised in school until their parents can collect them.

If you specifically require your son/daughter to remain in school in cases of closure for severe weather, please alert the Student Services Team (via the main College phone number) as a matter of importance.  If we do not receive specific instruction, students will be allowed to leave the school site after contacting parents.

Please ensure that we are kept up to date with email addresses and mobile phone numbers as we rely heavily on them for contacting parents/carers in emergencies. You can also sign up to our Twitter account @SettleCollege.

Students should assume that the school will re-open the following day unless indicated on our website or Twitter.
