Geography

The Geography Department is committed to providing a positive learning experience for all, regardless of background or ability. We endeavour to assist our students in developing good literacy, practical, graphical and oral skills. We strive to deliver our contemporary content through innovative and creative teaching, taking into account students learning styles and ability. We are committed to raising the profile of Geography within Settle College and to helping the subject expand. As a subject offering a bridging role between the Arts, the Sciences & Technology, we are in a unique position to engage students in topical and relevant debate and discussion, helping them to transfer knowledge and skills learnt across the College. We aim to develop independent learners who question and challenge the world around them. We aim to help students develop relevant life skills for their future. Fieldwork is a key part of the geography curriculum and supports learning through use of skills, data handling and presentation. We endeavour to give all year groups experience learning outside of the class room.

Key Stage 3

Our programme of study aims to develop students’ understanding of the changing world around them; building skills and knowledge essential for success in further study. We look at our own environment and interactions as well as those in distant places. Topics studied include local landscapes, jagged coasts, people everywhere and world cities.

Key Stage 4

At GCSE, students study a variety of human and physical Geography with a focus on human interactions and management. Skills developed at Key Stage 3 such as data handling, source interpretation and using evidence are a key part of GCSE lessons. Students study topics such as coastal environments, globalisation of industry and natural hazards. As well as examinations students at GCSE undertake fieldwork and a research project which makes up 25% of their final grade. The examination board is AQA B.

Key Stage 5

AS and A-Level Geography requires a more sophisticated skills set than at GCSE. Students can improve on existing skills with staff support and maintain them through independent study. Independence is actively encouraged at A-Level. Students are encouraged to use social media to build on and develop learning that has taken place in class. Students will study a range of topics which prepare them for further study in both the BSc and BA routes. Skills and knowledge developed in Geography lessons can be invaluable in the work place. Topics include the indepth study of rivers, population, health, weather and world cities.

Course Requirements
5 GCSEs at grade C or above, which must include GCSE Geography: Grade C or above on the higher tier paper
Where a student has not previously studied Geography, each case would be looked at individually

Course Description
This two-year course offers an issues-based approach to studying Geography, enabling students to explore and evaluate contemporary geographical questions and issues such as the consequences of globalisation, responses to hazards, water insecurity and climate change.  It gives students the opportunity to develop an in-depth understanding of physical and human geography, the complexity of people and environment questions and issues, and to become critical, reflective and independent learners.

Assessment Procedure
Paper 1
Written examination: 2 hours and 15 minutes; 30% of the qualification; 105 marks
Tectonic Processes and Hazards, Coastal Landscapes and Change, The Water Cycle and Water Insecurity and The Carbon Cycle and Energy Security

Paper 2
Written examination: 2 hours and 15 minutes; 30% of the qualification; 105 marks
Globalisation, Regenerating Places, Superpowers and Health, Human Rights and Intervention

Paper 3
2hrs 15 minutes; 20% of the qualification ; 70 marks
An externally assessed written examination comprising 3 sections. A resource booklet will contain information about the geographical issue.

Paper 4
Independent Fieldwork investigation
Non examined assessment; 20% of the qualification; 70  marks
Internally marked, externally moderated.
3000-4000 words.

Equipment and Additional Costs
Fieldwork is an essential element of the course and students will be expected to make a financial contribution towards excursions.  A non-compulsory visit to Iceland is organised as enrichment.  This is scheduled to run in the academic year 2017/18.

Progression
Geography offers routes into both BSc and BA courses in Higher Education.

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES

Visits in 2014 include the Trafford Centre (year 9), Furness Coast (GCSE), Malham (GCSE), Bradford (AS), Kettlewell (AS), London (A2), Barcelona (A-Level).

The Geography club runs on a Thursday and activities vary from watching documentaries to organising events such as the Geography general knowledge quiz.
