Accelerated Reader

Books are magical – igniting our imagination and transporting us to far- away places. At Settle College we aim to inspire all our students to read, both for enjoyment and to enable them to access non-fiction text books.

Accelerated Reader is a computer programme that assists us in monitoring students’ independent reading. At the start of the academic year an initial reading comprehension test gives us a reading level for the students and they pick a suitable book from the library to read at their own pace. Students take a short quiz after reading the book which gives us an indication of their understanding. Accelerated Reader produces feedback on quiz results which we can use to set targets and direct ongoing reading practice. According to research, children who read for at least 35 minutes a day with a 90% comprehension rate on Accelerated Reader quizzes, see the greatest gains.

Although we currently have limited movement in the library, our usual school structure involves year 7 and 8 students having one reading lesson a week in the school library, following the Accelerated Reader programme. In addition, students normally have silent reading time during form time every week and are still expected to read daily at home.

To find books that are interesting to your son/daughter visit and click advanced search to generate a book list. In September students bring home information to enable you to log onto your child’s individual account on Accelerated Reader in order to monitor their reading progress and access ideas to help support your child’s reading progress.
