Textiles Department

GCSE Textiles Technology is assessed through 60% controlled assessment and 40% examination.

Textiles Technology looks at how fabrics are constructively used, manipulated, and formed in different environments.  It is an area of design that we meet on a daily basis, through our exposure to all sorts of products - from pencil cases to DKNY designer clothing.

Students start the year with a short project in which they create a clutch bag.  This equips them with basic marking, cutting and sewing machine skills as well as allowing them to develop their creativity in this media. To futher their practical skills and prepare them for the controlled assessment, students are then required to make a specific garment (chosen by the teacher), and undertake a series of practice tasks to prepare them for the design aspect of the assessment.

The theory aspect of the Textiles course is studied via a series of short projects, in which students will use CAD/CAM in the form of computer controlled sewing machines, and will also cover a variety of practical applications such as screen-printing, batik and machine embroidery.  Following on from this, students will concentrate on the controlled assessment element of designing and making a textiles product. The controlled assessment is based on a set theme provided by the Exam Board.

Students can progress onto the A-Level Product Design courses in the Sixth Form, or use this GCSE as a first step towards a career in Interior, Fashion or Surface Design.
