At Settle College we want every student's experience to be a happy and rewarding
one, and have a network of pastoral care strategies in place to support
our
students and ensure that any concerns are quickly addressed. Every student
is allocated a tutor, with whom they will meet at least once a day. We see good tutoring as the essential core to pastoral care in the college.
Our business is to maximise students' attainment and achievement. As students progress through the College they will be placed in separate sets for subject areas and for their exam subjects. Everything that students have achieved in their previous schools forms the basis from which we set new and challenging targets for each individual. These targets are reviewed at regular times throughout each year. Should a student's progress fall significantly below our expectations, for any reason, we will discuss appropriate action with both with the student and their parents, to help them to overcome any problems and get back on track. The Student-College-Parent partnership is an essential element to all our work.
All students are set home learning tasks and should record these in their study planner. The amount and type will vary with the subjects they are taking. This work is of great importance and must be done fully and regularly. Parents are asked to assist with this by providing a warm, quiet place to study, if at all possible. If your son or daughter has difficulties with homework, please tell the tutor so that the matter can be attended to. Parents are asked to check that homework is being completed, and to check their child's planner on a regular basis.

Rewards
Students are allocated to a house as indicated above. Students will be awarded housepoints for completing work to a good standard, for complying with school rules and for participating in school and community events. There are half termly raffles to award prizes, with raffle ticket allocations based on the number of housepoints the student has collected. In addition to this, staff are asked to nominate students each month to acknowledge their contributions at school. All nominated students will receive a letter home to inform parents of their nomination, and the students selected have their names displayed on the "Student of the Month" noticeboard in the school reception area. The categories for nomination are "Student of the Month" (one for each house), a Community Award and a half-termly Technology Award.
Facebook, Formspring, Mobile Phones and
E-Bullying
There is increasing concern in schools nationally about incidents of e-bullying via text, email, Facebook and Formspring. Parents are asked to be very vigilant over their son/daughter’s use of such sites. Please note it is now possible to put very tight controls on your Facebook page which blocks access to all but your own “friends”. The protection that school has in place is as follows:
• School E Mail – any school emails
containing offensive words or phrases are immediately re-directed to Heads of
House for appropriate action
• Students are allowed to have mobile phones and
ipods in school. However, these must be switched off at all times other than
break and lunch time (when they may be used outside the building). Here we are
very concerned that some students are using their phones to email or go on
Facebook etc.
• Headphones must not be used at any time in lessons or on the
corridor.
• Staff will confiscate phones or ipods where the above rules are
not followed
All students and staff are clear about the above rules. We hope students will be responsible and abide by the school's procedures. The alternative would be a blanket ban on mobile devices, which we believe undesirable in such a deeply rural area.
