Maths KS4

Key Stage 4

Year 10

Students in year 10 are taught at a pace matched to the ability they have shown throughout Key Stage 3.

This year we are embarking on a Modular GCSE Maths course   (OCR Mathematics C J517). This will involve sitting exams which count towards the final qualification, throughout years 10 and 11. A terminal paper still takes place in May/June of year 11. The higher tier paper comprises grades A*-D, whilst the foundation paper comprises grades C-G. There is no longer a coursework element in GCSE Maths.

Year 11

During year 11, students follow the AQA Linear Maths GCSE (4306), whereby both examination papers take place in May or June of Year 11.

The higher tier (A*-D) will comprise two 2-hour exams (calculator and non-calculator).

The foundation tier (C-G) will comprise two 1½-hour exams (calculator and non-calculator).

There is no longer a coursework element in GCSE Maths.

We participate in such things as the UK Mathematics Challenge and National Number Day. Whilst all students are offered (and many accept!) wide-ranging extra-curricular support with their mathematical studies, we would like to develop the range of opportunities available beyond the classroom. All suggestions for clubs are welcome.

We place students in one of six sets at Key Stage 4, using both external and internal sources of data.

All students receive four Maths lessons per week. In addition to their main maths qualification, some students will receive AS Maths ‘taster modules’ and some students will be given the opportunity to undertake an additional qualification in Adult Numeracy. A level 2 pass in this examination is considered equivalent to half a GCSE at level C or above.
