KS3 Music

Students in year 9 will study 6 topics across the year, listed below:

  • Dance Music

  • Indonesian Gamelan music

  • Sound 2 game (Sound engineer)

  • Beat boxing

  • Arranging

  • Record Producer/ Record Label project

Each of the topics studied in music will follow the same pattern. Throughout the year students will develop their performance, compositional, listening and appraising skills, while working individually or as part of a group. Technology is becoming a larger part of music and students will get the opportunity to work with music specific software on some topics. The music class room currently has 9 computers linked to midi keyboards, all with either Sibelius 4, guitar pro and Cubase (Studio 4 and SL). There is also a music practise room for visiting peripatetic teachers and band practice.

Students will be set small pieces of home learning involving some kind of research at the start of each topic followed by practical home learning in future weeks. This may involve students practising, rehearsing, listening or composing a piece of music, individually or in groups. There is an expectation that time will be spent at break and lunchtimes or after school working on practical tasks. If students have their own instruments they may wish to practise at home as an alternative. Students’ end of topic marks will be based upon all aspects of music including practical, written and verbal work.
