English Department

The English Department’s Philosophy

The teaching of English is concerned with the acquisition of language skills and an aesthetic appreciation of the written word.

We aim to:

  • Empower pupils through helping them make meaning by the development of critical skills as a result of increased familiarity with different sorts of texts

  • Encourage a celebration of language and its depiction of human experiences.

  • Contribute to the emotional, aesthetic, spiritual and intellectual development of students.

  • Foster a critical awareness of literature and the media

  • Extend students’ confidence in, and control of, a variety of linguistic domains such as reading, writing, speaking and listening.

It is the duty of the English department to ensure that teaching based upon these premises occurs and is delivered with enthusiasm and conviction.

We believe that all students should be strongly encouraged to celebrate their achievements, identify the areas in which there is room for improvement and raise their expectations of themselves.

We believe that teaching and learning should be based on mutual respect. A positive working environment is created when parameters and expectations are clearly defined and both students and teachers can feel comfortable and confident in the learning environment.  Members of the department have the flexibility to develop and employ their own styles, which may vary according to the group, nature of the task and many other considerations

English is the medium of creative activity, imagination and transaction. In a world where communication, in its many forms, seems to be expanding irrevocably, the subject plays as vital a role as ever in the development of our young citizens and society in general.
