Year 8 Options 2010

Option Subjects

The table overleaf is designed to give a flavour of the courses on offer. A full option booklet will be sent to all students and parents in January. This information will also be available on our website. We will be coming in to Middle Schools to support and advise students on their choices.

  • Students will list 4 subjects in order of preference – we will guarantee two of those subjects in Year 9 – options for Year10 and 11 can change
  • Pink shaded areas show those subjects which are a compulsory part of the curriculum
  • Blue shading indicates where students will have a degree of choice but that this will be guided by teaches, usually based on ability
  • Yellow shading indicates areas where there is a completely free choice
  • Talkabout is a study skills based course for students who are advised to focus on one fewer option choices in order to maximise their achievement
  • The COPE Award (Certificate of Personal Effectiveness) is, again, a skills based award designed to give a nationally validated qualification for those students who are less likely to achieve level 2 qualifications – entry onto this is by discussion between students, parents and teachers
  • All students are required to take a technology based subject (Graphics, Product Design, Catering or Textiles) as part of our Technology College status, however this can be in any of Years 9, 10 or 11
  • Level 2 = GCSE equivalent, Level 3 = AS/A2 equivalent
  • For BTec Dance and Drama students are required to perform as part of the examination, we therefore ask students to do a small (non threatening) audition to check they are comfortable with this
  • Continuity language is for those students who wish to keep their language (French or Spanish) alive before taking it at GCSE in Years 10 or 11
  • At the moment we expect to offer all the subjects listed. We hope to offer German but this is still in the planning stage. German would be started from scratch and would be for the more able students
