OCR GCSE Religious Studies B: Philosophy and Applied Ethics is a popular choice, offering a modern and inspiring course that helps students learn about the approaches of religion and philosophy to some of the fundamental questions about human existence, and of religion and ethics to some of the most important questions about how people behave and why.
This GCSE provides a more modern approach to studying topics related to religion. Students look at today’s issues – perhaps including things they see or read about in the news. Different philosophies are explored, and students learn about ethics in areas such as medicine and in relation to peace and justice, poverty and wealth, and more. The course develops skills in interpreting and evaluating pieces of information, communicating and applying knowledge, and in solving problems. Students also have opportunities to develop their debating skills.
The course is studied in Years 9 and 10, and there are 2 exam papers, each 1 hour long.
This course could take students towards a number of careers, including working in the police or as a counsellor, social worker, nurse, youth worker, teacher or philosopher, in organisations such as the Peace Corps or Amnesty International, or in any career that requires an understanding of people.
