EDEXCEL AS/A LEVEL HISTORY

Course Requirements

GCSE History at Grade C or above.  However, it is possible to take history at AS/A level without having studied the subject at GCSE.  The most important requirements are a proven ability to work hard, a sound command of English and adequate general success at GCSE.

Course Description (AS)

During Year 12 students will study 2 different units:

  • A World Divided: Communism and Democracy in the 20th century

We will look at 2 case studies:

    • Stalin’s Russia, 1924-53

    • Equality in the USA, 1945-68
    • The Changing Position of Women  in Britain, 1860-1930

Course Description (A2)

In Year 13 students will study 2 further periods of history, which build on and develop some of the issues and ideas raised during the Year 12 programme.  These are likely to be:

    • The State and the Poor in Britain, 1815-1930
    • From Kaiser to Fuhrer: Germany, 1900-45

Assessment

At the end of Year 12 students sit written examinations in the two AS units.

The A2 course is assessed by one written examination and 2 coursework essays.
