Philosophy

To challenge and stimulate students to appreciate the extent of the Science of the chemical world by providing a contextual Chemistry education and to promote students as appliers of scientific knowledge.

Qualifications

 

Students study towards AS and A2 OCR Salter’s Chemistry.  This course has been developed by the Nuffield Foundation in conjunction with the Salter’s Institute to contextualise Chemistry theory and develop students’ Chemistry knowledge and analytical skills to cope with the demands of studying Chemistry and Chemistry related subjects at degree level.

 

5 periods per week are allocated to Chemistry of which one is a double which is usually used for practical work.  The course encompasses acquisition of theoretical Chemistry and Chemistry related practical skills, together with practical and theoretical application.  Coursework includes assessment of 5 key skills areas in year 12 and a full investigation in year 13.

 

Chemistry is a popular option at post 16 and is essential for those students wishing to undertake a career in medicine or pharmacy.  Many Universities ask students applying for Biological Science degrees to have studied Chemistry at A level.  Chemistry and Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Chemistry and Geography are particularly good subject combinations for further progression.
