KS5 Geography

A2 Geography – This course will change from September 09.

Learning Content

At A2 Geography is about building on the knowledge and understanding gained in AS. Students develop their handling of statistics and their command of Geographical terminology to support essay writing and coursework. Two of the units covered are examined and both contain synoptic essays. A2 students are beginning to consolidate their learning and show an ability to use knowledge and case-studies from a range of topics. A2 Geography helps the students prepare for study of Geography or Environmental and Social sciences in higher education. Students studying AS have 5 contact periods with staff, they also have the opportunity to access further time out of college hours.

 

Out of Class Opportunities

Fieldwork is an essential part of the A2 course and is a requirement of the syllabus. Students in year 13 complete an investigation of their choice as part of their assessment process, this requires students to design and complete their own fieldwork.

 

Examinations

Students complete a piece of coursework as described above, this contributes to 20% of their total A-Level grade. The coursework is started in June and must be completed by December. Students also take 2 other exams both worth 15% of the total A-Level marks. These exams test the students ability to link knowledge and understanding and their essay writing abilities.
