(Edexcel History B – Schools History Project)

Course Description and Assessment details

You will study History from four different angles, all of which are worth 25% of your final mark.

  • A Development Study which focuses on change and continuity over a long period of time.  Our topic for this study is medicine.  We will look at people’s understanding, treatment and prevention of illness in different periods, from the Middle Ages to the present day.
  • A Source Enquiry on the transformation of surgery c1845 – c1918.
  • A Depth Study on Life in Germany c1919-45.  We will learn about the problems Germany faced after the First World War and how these contributed to the rise of Hitler.  We will also learn about the key features of Nazi government, and the impact the Nazi state had on different groups of people.
  • A controlled assessment on the impact of war on Britain, c1914-50, to be completed under controlled conditions in class.

The first 3 units are assessed by written examinations, each worth 25% of the final grade.  The controlled assessment will be completed under controlled conditions in class.

Why choose this course?

You will enjoy this course if you are interested in:

  • Finding out about how people’s lives have changed and how people in the past may have thought differently from us.
  • Debating and understanding why there are sometimes different, but equally valid, points of view on the same subject.

You will be developing many useful skills.  You will be much more critical of what you read and hear on the news, and you will develop your abilities to reason and argue your point of view with supporting information.
