GCSE Geography AQA specification B

The GCSE Geography qualification is split into 4 units each worth 25% of the total GCSE grade. Students study coastal environments, living with natural hazards and the globalisation of industry, which are all examined formally. The course also requires students to complete two pieces of controlled assessment which are collectively worth 25% of the GCSE. The first controlled assessment is a piece of fieldwork which changes each year and the second is a research project based on water issues. The coastal environments and natural hazards units can be examined in January with the globalisation of industry unit examined in June along with any retakes. GCSE in Geography helps students to develop a knowledge of the world around them while building on communication and data handling skills. GCSE Geographers have a total of 10 contact lessons with their teachers over two weeks. They also have the opportunity for extension sessions arranged with their teacher after College hours.

Out of Class Opportunities

Students complete controlled assessments, these allow the students to investigate a topical issue, collect and manipulate data and analyse results. One of the pieces of controlled assessment requires a field visit, its location changes on a yearly basis. There has also been a visit to Iceland looking at the Geological formations and unique environment of the country which the department would hope to run again.
