Learning Content
Students follow a programme designed to look at both the local and global environment. They begin in September by studying our unique local landscape, how it was formed and the interactions between humans and nature that take place there. At the end of the first half term students in year 9 begin to study more complex ideas of local and international weather and climate, and complete a coursework like investigation. Lastly Global issues will be studied with a focus on local action, global effect this unit takes into account issue that are topical such as sustainability. Students study Geography twice a week in year 9.
Out of Class Opportunities
Students complete fieldwork in Settle and around the College site so that they can develop a variety of skills which will be built on at GCSE and in a working environment. There are lots of opportunities for students to take part in projects related to Geography. Once a year there is the opportunity to enter into the National Geographic competition. The department also holds smaller competitions through out the year.
Assessments
Assessments in Geography test students through a variety of activities. The department assesses during lessons and formally at the end of a topic. Assessments include mystery tasks, investigations and decision making exercises.
