In year 9, students study a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts. In the first half-term, students will introduce themselves to their new teacher through autobiographical writing, in addition to studying a variety of genres. The main focus of the spring term is preparing students for the SAT exam which involves the study of Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ as well as how to write for a variety of purposes and audiences and analyse a range of text types. In the summer term, students begin making the transition to GCSE, learning how to read different media texts and exploring the notion of culture and cultural identity through the study of poems stemming from different backgrounds.
Information is gathered from students’ previous results and performance at middle school in order to set them according to ability in year 9. Our SAT results are much higher than the national average and act as a springboard to GCSE studies.
