Assessment and Grading
All units are internally assessed. All assessments for the BTEC qualification are criterion referenced, based on the achievement of all the specified learning outcomes. Each unit within the qualification has specified assessment and grading criteria which are used to grade students’ work. A unit grade can be awarded at pass, merit or distinction:
to achieve a ‘pass’ a learner must have satisfied all the pass criteria.
to achieve a ‘merit’ a learner must additionally have satisfied all the merit criteria.
to achieve a ‘distinction’ a learner must additionally have satisfied all the distinction criteria.
A grading scale of pass, merit and distinction is applied to all units.
There are four graded areas:
application of knowledge and understanding of issues relating to sport and exercise.
development of practical and technical skills.
personal development for occupational roles.
application of generic skills.
Points per Credit: Pass:- 5 Merit:- 6 Distinction:- 7
Learners studying for the qualification can use their previous experience in sport and physical activity and this will be utilised to maximum effect by their teachers. The use of assessment evidence drawn from learners’ practical work is an important feature of the course.
The course enables learners to produce evidence in a variety of different forms, including written reports, graphs and posters, along with projects, performance observation and time-constrained assessments.
The emphasis is upon the practical application of the assessment and grading criteria, providing a realistic scenario for learners to adopt, and making maximum use of practical activities and experience. The creation of assignments that are fit for purpose is also vital to students’ motivation and achievement.
The assessment and grading criteria is clearly indicated in the assignments. This allows our students to access immediate feedback on their work whilst ensuring that learner feedback is specific to the assessment and grading criteria.
The course is suited to all students throughout the ability range, and whilst prowess in sport is not a requirement in order to succeed, a keen interest in the subject is essential.
