2020 is a year we will not forget, faced with the news that schools were going to close imminently and exams were cancelled for the summer. After the initial shock and confusion of what was happening, we were drawn to the fact that Friday could be the last day for our Year 11 & 13 students. Starting on Thursday when we were greeted with questions and confusion from our students, we decided we had less than 48 hours to plan and execute leavers day celebrations.
On Thursday we set about implementing the plan, buying what we could to make their special day memorable. Staff and students came together sending celebration slides and photos for the Year 11’s final assembly. Friday arrived and Year 11’s were excited but apprehensive about the possibility of it being their last day.
The sun was shining, and it almost felt like a Leavers Day in July. Students were out taking photos and enjoying what could be their last few hours at Settle College. The leavers assembly had an overwhelming response from students and staff, with 100 celebration slides from staff and over 300 photographs from the students in the short 24 hours we had. We were all determined to make what could be their last day a success. Students relished their assembly and all the effort was worth it to see their enjoyment and celebrations.
As the assembly and the day came to an end the laughter turned into tears as reality hit them. As the hugs, tears and laughter filled the room, the worry and stress of the last 48 hours was clear. Although we are not sure what the future will hold we can reflect and have a satisfaction that the class of 2020 went out on a high. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to have worked with these students and all staff at Settle College wish them the best of luck for their next chapter.
